Michelle Koplitz, a native of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was chosen
the second Miss Deaf USA on April 17. On May 26, she received her Master’s
in Health Sciences degree in Health Education and Health Communications from
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. These two accomplishments
are not at all contradictory. Koplitz entered the competition (her first)
for the experience, not expecting to win, and impressed the judges with her
yoga-themed talent routine and her onstage interview, in which she summarized
her platform: promoting better access to health information in the Deaf community,
better health practices, and better communications between the medical sector
and young Deaf people. Now, that’s a winner!
