Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind was founded as a small family-run school in 1858. It has evolved into the nation's most comprehensive array of educational. vocational, and technical services to deaf, blind, deafblind, and multi-handicapped students and adults. Our cover story retraces its history through wars, the Great Depression, expansion, desegregation, and the challenges presented by mainstreaming and politics.
