Opera, a grand mixture of theater, singing, and orchestral music, has never been especially accessible to deaf audiences. Happily, that situation is changing now. Wendy Ebsworth, a British Sign Language interpreter, has been adding a new dimension of enjoyment to classical and modern operas staged at the Royal Opera House and English National Opera (among others). She has attracted an enthusiastic following of Deaf fans, and hearing opera fans who love to watch her work. Even though they can hear the music and dialogue quite nicely, they feel that she conveys the emotions of the music better than some of the singers do!
