August 2007

A chance encounter with a “fundraiser” exhibiting a group of deaf children marked the beginning of philanthropist and former statesman Amos Kendall’s involvement with the Deaf community—which led to his founding a small school on his summer estate in Washington, D.C. This school became the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School, and its collegiate division Gallaudet University. KDES, founded in 1857, is celebrating its sesquicentennial. This month’s cover feature looks back over its rich history and the story of its founding.
