January 2007

On May 1, 2006, when the Gallaudet University Board of Trustees announced that Jane Kelleher Fernandes had been appointed president, protests erupted on campus, and rekindled, escalatiing in intensity, in October. There were rallies, demonstrations, barricading of the gates—some incidents reminiscent of the March 1988 DPN, others considerably nastier, as when backhoes arrived to demolish "Tent City," and some 133 protestors were arrested on "Black Friday." The protest ended on October 29, when Fernandes' appointment was revoked by the Board. Our cover feature, a timeline, summarizes events and issues of the protest.
