It's impossible to write about the history of the Deaf community of Texas without mentioning Jerry Hassell. He was a loving husband, father, advocate, teacher, mentor, churchgoer, lobbyist, storyteller, and good neighbor. He helped establish a statewide interpreter-certification program, one of the dozen or so bills benefiting the Deaf community (telecommunications, recognition of ASL, etc.) that he helped get passed. His death from renal failure ended his career, but his influence continues. Our cover feature includes numerous tributes from family, friends, colleagues, and students.
